Crystal Reid-Gross was 6 years old when
her passion for cooking ignited: She heard
that Elvis liked fried peanut butter-and-
banana sandwiches, “so I went to the
kitchen and fried a banana,” she recalls.
Years after mimicking ‘T h e King”
Crystal has become ‘T h e Queen”— of
showers, that is. “Anytime anybody is
having a baby or getting married, they
want me to host their shower because I
prepare such delicious spreads,” says
Crystal, who gives credit to her Pink Plaid
cookbook, a gift from her sister.
The two grew up on Red Plaid recipes.
“In the South, the book is as common as
okra,” Crystal says. “Everybody has one.
And the book is important because it
gives you a way to pass the best recipes
down to your children.”
For Crystal, a creative type who runs
her own photography business, Bel
Sorriso (Italian for “beautiful smile”),
cooking also is a form of self-expression.
She’s always looking to try new recipes or
perfect old ones— like the quintessential
Southern biscuits. “My grandmother’s
biscuits are so light they float,” she raves.
“Like angels.”
Crystal’s aren’t quite as heavenly. Yet
But there’s another batch com ing And it
com es from the heart “Cooking” Crystal
says, “is how I show people how much I
love and care for them.”
